What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is an outdoor recreational treasure-hunting game using a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device to hide-and-seek containers, called geocaches or caches.

Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.

A typical cache contains a logbook where the geocacher enters the date they found it (FTF - First to Find - status is very important!) and signs it with their established code name. After signing, the cache must be placed back exactly where the person found it so that others will be able to play!

Geocaching is an activity that can be enjoyed by families, individuals, and groups of all sizes. The benefits of this activity include socialization and access to the outdoors - instead of watching moves and TV shows about treasure hunters, and you can become a treasure hunter yourself!

Bernalillo County welcomes geocachers on its Open Space lands.  The county requires any individual who would like to place a geocache to follow all Bernalillo County Open Space regulations and county ordinances, as well as geocache guidelines. 

Bernalillo County reserves the right to remove any geocaches deemed inappropriate, or that have not followed geocaching guidelines; or are not in alignment with county ordinances.  If there are any questions about placing geocaches or if you are concerned about an existing geocache, contact Open Space Coordinator Colleen Langan McRoberts  at (505)314-0398 or by email.
